Rep. Ted Lieu (D-CA) has become infamous for trying to troll President Donald Trump on Twitter. He has turned his “mean tweets” into a fundraising machine. But on Wednesday, Lieu had egg on his face when he was confronted by CNN — yes, CNN — about his behavior on social media.

The context was Lieu’s tweets prior to Tuesday’s hearing with Attorney General Jeff Sessions at the House Judiciary Committee. Lieu, attempting to mimic Trump’s habit of assigning nicknames to his political opponents, kept referring to the Attorney General as “Lyin’ Jeff Sessions.”

Some of Lieu’s tweets were sent from the hearing room itself:

Lieu tweeted the portion of his CNN interview when he accused Sessions of misleading Congress about contacts with Russia and meetings about Russia.

But he left out an exchange when the CNN anchors asked him to justify calling Sessions names and mocking his appearance on social media prior to the hearing. “Is that a grown-up thing to do, Congressman?”

Lieu broke with First Lady Michelle Obama’s dictum, “When they go low, we go high.” Instead, Lieu said: “When they go low, we fight back.”

Lieu, a colonel in the U.S. also argues that President Trump is illegitimate.
